Geology and Mineral Resources
The Geology and Mineral Resources Program is a Major National Research Program (MNRP) No 12 entitled ‘Geology, Mineral Resources & Natural Disasters’ (Law N° 007/CAB/MINREST/A00 of 16 September 1998). This involves 1/200 000-scale geological mapping of Cameroon, exploration of mineral resources, study of sedimentary basins and seismic & volcanological monitoring in Cameroon.
The program is carried out by IRGM researchers and technicians from the Garoua Geological and Mining Research Centre, the Yaoundé Ore Processing and Remote Sensing Laboratories, and the Ekona Antenna for Geophysical and Volcanological Research; in collaboration with national and foreign partners. Students from State Universities participate in the program as part of their training

      Objectives of the Programs:

    • Use geological mapping, petrology and metallogeny to enhance knowledge on geology and mineral resources of Cameroon
    • Use geophysical methods to study the structure of the crust and related volcanic and seismic risks
    • Develop and apply new technologies in geological research and ore processing
    • Disseminate research results with a perspective on mineral exploration – constitution of a geological and geophysical database for land management.

    Main Projects:

  • Geological mapping and mineral prospection aimed at producing larger scale geological maps that give more information on the exiting geological infrastructure
  • Studies of continental sedimentary basins (Logone-Birni et de Mamfe) for their hydrocarbon potentials
  • Prevention of natural disasters by seismic and volcanological monitoring of Mt. Cameroon
  • Geologic and tectonic studies aimed at using new research techniques and methods adapted to modern technologies

(Projet PICG / UNESCO)
